Best Storage Practices

Clean all items before placing in storage.
Food crumbs or particles left on furniture or in clothing are an invitation for bugs and pests.
Make sure appliances are clean and dry before placing in storage. It is best to leave the doors slightly ajar to keep any moisture inside the appliance from causing mold/mildew.
Do not store gasoline or anything else that is flammable/combustible in your unit. Lawn mowers or other vehicles should have gas drained from them before placing them inside the unit.
Allow walkways in the unit so items are easily accessible.

Create a diagram of where important items are located inside the storage unit to make retrieval of a specific item easy.
Use boxes of the same size if possible to allow for easy stacking and to conserve space in your unit.
Stuff partially filled boxes with filler to prevent them from collapsing when stacked.
Label each box with its contents on all 4 sides.
Utilize furniture drawers to store smaller and more fragile items.
Dismantle furniture to save space.

Turn couches/loveseats on end to conserve space. Boxes stacked on top of soft furniture can often cause permanent damage to the padding so it is best to avoid this if possible.
Avoid crowding things at the door of the unit to avoid having items fall out of the unit when the door is rolled up.
Use bubble wrap, plastic, or other protective coverings to keep your items safe.
